Tips: Common Credit Card Processing Issues and Resolutions

Common issues and solutions vary by gateway, but there are some things that are shared among them.  

Symptom: Declined transaction, error message about AVS failure

AVS stands for Address Verification Service.  Similar to entering one's ZIP code at a gas pump, this checks the billing address entered in StarChapter against the address information for the card.  If there are some variations, this can result in a declined transaction.  Usually checking in ZIP code only is sufficient for security and looser settings will resolve this issue.  We advise checking with your payment gateway provider before making any changes to your gateway settings. 

Symptom: Declined transaction for American Express

Your gateway account may not be set up to accept American Express. You can:

  • Contact your gateway to adjust your setting.

  • Go to Meetings > Settings > Payments. Select the American Express to accept payment.

Authorize.net Issue with Required Fields

In the control panel for Authorize.net, there are settings to configure required fields. If a field is required that StarChapter does not collect, this will result in payment processing errors.  We recommend consulting with your gateway provider before making changes to the required fields.
